DeepSeek is a Chinese startup that develops generative AI models. Its most recent releases are V3 and R1 which users can already use today in KNIME.

• DeepSeek-V3 is a general purpose chat model that can be used for text-based generative tasks (e.g. summarization, translation, question answering, code generation, etc.). It uses a machine learning approach called Mixture-of-Experts (MoE), which means it leverages many smaller “expert” networks inside, where each is specialized in a specific task or subset of tasks. • DeepSeek-R1 is a reasoning model, specifically designed for complex tasks that require deeper thinking. To improve its ability to analyze and solve problems, it was trained in multiple stages using reinforcement learning and fine-tuned with examples that show step-by-step reasoning (called Chains of Thought, or CoT). This helps the model provide more logical and well-structured answers, making it ideal for tasks that need careful thought.
